Poles in Harbin

Scroll down for English

Pan Kowalski – najbogatszy, posiadał różne koncesje, m.in. zbił fortunę na handlu drewnem.
Krzysztof Warlikowski z zespołem Teatru Nowego – w 2016 r. wystawiali tu „(A)pollonię”.

Poles in Harbin

Maybe now we are the only ones (maybe not, but we haven’t met anybody from Poland till know), however, we surely weren’t first here. Before us, among thousands of Poles here lived:

Mr. Kowalski – the richest one, the owner of many concessions. He made a fortune on the wood trade.
Stanisław Kierbedź – the nephew of the designer of Kierbedź bridge in Warsaw, also a bridge engineer. The construction of his project we present on the photo.
Teodor Parnicki – mainly known as the author of historical novels. But here, in HRB the action of his debut thriller/detective novel takes place: „Trzy minuty po trzeciej”.
Krzysztof Warlikowski and the team of Nowy Teatr – in 2016  they staged the play „(A)pollonia” here.

A distinguished Polish Harbinian is Edward Kajdański, born in 1925, currently living in Gdańsk merited diplomat and the author of various publications about China. The book “Wspomnienia z mojej Atlantydy” concerns his life in Harbin.

(By the way, putting the Polish theme aside, we want to mention another person that was born in Harbin. It’s the actor Pierre Batcheff, who played in “An Andalusian Dog”).

That’s good that an exhibition about the presence of Poles in HRB was organised in the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum, because it’s not common knowledge that many Poles lived here. People remember about Russians. They even somehow cherish the memory of their presence in Harbin and mainly reshape it into tourist attractions for Chinese from other provinces. Some inhabitants of Harbin remember Poles living in the city. Once, when we were on a bus with students, an od lady accosted us. She was happy that young Chinese learn Polish language. The lady was recalling the times when she was a child playing together with children from Polish families.
